Enter the candidate card’s annual fee, the alternative’s fee, and each effective reward rate expressed as a percentage of eligible spending. Effective rates should reflect your realistic redemption choices. Include candidate credits only at the amount you would otherwise pay from your own budget; this simplified model assumes the alternative has no additional credits.

Extra fixed cost = candidate fee − alternative fee − usable candidate credits. If the candidate earns more per dollar, break-even spending = extra fixed cost ÷ ((candidate rate − alternative rate) ÷ 100). With illustrative fees of $95 and $0 and rates of 3% and 2%, the threshold is $9,500 a year. Above that level, the candidate wins within this model.

If rates are equal, spending cannot offset a higher fee. If the candidate earns less but has a fixed-cost advantage, it can win only below a crossover; the result explains that case. Exclude sign-up bonuses from a recurring comparison, and recheck caps, restrictions, interest and your willingness to manage benefits before deciding.
